School Board Chairman Bill Sublette has made clear that Orange needs to at least consider a gifted school such as the highly regarded Pine View School in Sarasota County. To address disparities, Orange schools universally screen second-graders in high-poverty schools for gifted, and they admit some students based on potential and academic performance instead of raw IQ. Gifted services aren’t mandated by federal law, and the depth of offerings can be influenced by the number of higher-income parents advocating for them, said Tiombe Kendrick, a school psychologist in Miami-Dade schools and president-elect of Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted, an advocacy group for gifted children and adults. In a regular class, that wouldn’t be their top priority,” Siddique said. “There are other needs these kids have other than academics. National experts say highly gifted children can be hypersensitive or perfectionist, for example. “These kids are different,” said Aly Siddique, Luka’s mother. While working on the explorers project recently, Luka chatted with classmate Jake Joyce, 10, about which world leaders attended Nelson Mandela’s funeral. Graham and parents say that the program, which is paid for out of Blankner’s school budget, also gives children a place where they can talk to other kids who understand them. The program is called Academically Accelerated Individualized Model – or AAIM for short. Entry criteria includes superior IQ testing, a portfolio of work and a demonstrated need for acceleration or emotional support that isn’t being met at their home school. To get into Graham’s class, most students are recommended by a gifted resource teacher at their home school. “My second-grade teacher was teaching one times five, which my mom taught me in kindergarten,” said the 8-year-old third-grader. Last year, Luka Siddique was so bored in classes at his neighborhood school that he would fall asleep, he said. Instead of focusing solely on state standards, which these children have already mastered, Graham goes beyond the curriculum and creates independent projects for her students, such as a recent assignment comparing explorers over time. Graham said she tells her 14 students that her classroom is where their dreams come true. He loves that teacher Melissa Graham gave students “pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis” as a word of the week earlier this year. Now in fourth grade, Spencer finds his new class more challenging. Other schools offer a full-time class at each grade level with a gifted-certified teacher.Īnd at a single school, Blankner K-8, there is a teacher offering a full-time class for highly gifted third- to fifth-graders who aren’t getting what they need anywhere else. A common model for serving students with above-average IQs is a weekly session with a gifted resource teacher. In Orange, most gifted resources are at the elementary level.
